Malinche, a Nahua woman, was forced into slavery and a relationship with Cortes during the Spanish conquest of Mexico.  She is now often understood as the Judas of indigenous Mexico, so to speak—though her true role in Mexican public memory is far more ambiguous.  This piece by Jimmie Durham reflects that ambiguity by fragmenting her body into opposing elements and materials.  The charred wooden foot and sorrowful expression elucidate the damage her myth has caused her.  It’s like my favorite-ist postcolonial professor always said, “Colonialism affects and changes everybody—the colonized and the colonizers.”
